I always try to write on the principal of the iceberg.

There is seven-eights of it under water for every part

that shows. Anything you know you can eliminate and

it only strengthens your iceberg. It is the part that

          doesn't show.

                                           --Ernest Hemingway, 1958

If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young

man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays

with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.

                                                            --Hemingway, 1950

I've seen you, beauty, and you belong to me now, whoever

you are waiting for and if I never see you again, I thought.

You belong to me and all Paris belongs to me and I belong

to this notebook and this pencil.

  --"A Moveable Feast"

I wished I had died before I ever loved anyone but her.

                                            --"A Moveable Feast"

I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and

think, "Do not worry. You have always written before

and you will write now. All you have to do is write one

true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.

So finally I would write one true sentence, and then go

on from there. It was easy then because there was always

one true sentence that I knew or had seen or had heard

          someone say.

                                              --"A Moveable Feast"

As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and

their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed

away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture,

and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed

it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty

feeling and began to be happy.

                                                        --"A Moveable Feast"

First it is stimulating and fun and it goes on that way

for a while. All things truly wicked start from an

          innocence.

                                                    --"A Moveable Feast"

But you knew there would always be the spring.....

                                                   --"A Moveable Feast"

But Paris was a very old city and we were young and

nothing was simple there, not even poverty, nor sudden

money, nor the moonlight, nor right and wrong, nor

the breathing of someone who lay beside you in the

          moonlight.

                                                     --"A Moveable Feast"

I am like a blind pig when I work. In the bush

                                                       --"A Moveable Feast"
